Chapter two

William heard the shot and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. This was not the first time that he had seen a dead body on his command, but this had happened, so unexpectedly that it was jarring to his system. It took a moment for him to realize the danger that they were in. He motioned for his men with hand movements to move for cover. He jumped down from the jeep, landing heavily on his steel toed shoes. He grabbed Kathy and pulled her down onto the ground, just as a bullet whizzed by her ear and penetrated into a nearby tree.

“Kathy, you need to do exactly what I tell you without hesitation. This is a matter of life and death.” What she didn’t know was that William wasn’t entirely truthful about the reason why he was here. It wasn’t his place, but he had heard through the Grapevine that the rebels had found out what her true connection to the senator was. He had taken it upon himself to contact the senator and inform him of this information. That was when they requested that he bring his team in to rescue her, before was too late.

Kathy was beside herself and the bullets were flying in every direction. The kids were screaming and she could see Erica dragging them into the safety of the building. She was very brave to come out and put her life on the line for these kids. She wanted to do something, but she was cowering with her hands over her head, like that was going to make a difference, if a bullet caught her between the eyes.

William watched two of his men get gunned down in the prime of their life. They were both family men and he found displeasure in telling their loved ones about their demise. It was not something that he would wish on his worst enemy. The look on their faces, as he stood at their door was very telling. He rarely ever had to say the words for them to understand what had happened.

“Find that sniper and put him out of his misery.” He screamed into the mic against his throat and got only static, as a response. “If anybody can hear me, get a bead on that shooter and take him out. We need to get out of here and this is not the place or the time for some kind of firefight.” Whoever was the shooter was very good and had the expertise of camouflaging himself.

William risked a glance over the hood and saw the glint of the gun in the distance. He was obviously perched high in a tree and getting a sight on him was not going to be easy by any means. “Tony, he’s on your flank. You’re out of his line of fire and you need to go around the gate and pursue him on foot. Don’t get caught, or that’s the last thing that you’re going to do. I’ll try to keep his attention for, as long as possible.
